Anterior Implants by Dr. Terry S. Shapiro
One of the most difficult dental procedures is that of matching a crown to a natural tooth. The color, texture, and shape have to be identical or the aesthetics will be poor. The dentist has also to pay attention to the gingival level. Matching two front teeth is a challenge. The dentist has to have a good color sense and needs to use modern dental photography and work with an expert ceramist.
Even more difficult is matching a front implant tooth to a natural tooth. Again the dentist must pay careful attention to detail.
The following photo illustrates an old crown with poor aesthetics. The color is wrong, the shape is wrong - the crown is too short and too wide. Too much gum is showing and it is infected ( see how puffy and red it is). The patient was very unhappy. After careful examination and discussion, we determined that the tooth could not be saved. The patient opted for an implant.

I would never send a patient home like this - so we had a temporary bonded bridge ready the day of the extraction.
After the healing process, an implant, an implant abutment and implant crown were all placed. Notice how the shape and color of the tooth match the other central incisor. We were both thrilled with the final result!
